Bradley Bougardt aka “Bogie” came from some way off the pace to scoop the first prize worth R100 000 in a thrilling finish to the KZN 2010 Charity Turf Challenge! Bradley scored 51 points on the day to take his final tally to 218, with Irish Flame (24), Orbison (20) and Golden Parachute (7) doing the honours. Shurlock did best of the rest finishing on 214 points with Here To Win earning 15 points for her Gr.1 win in the Garden Province Stakes, Irish Flame and Golden Parachute being his other two point scorers on the day.

The leader going into the final day of the competition, Trevor Hughes, was hoping for a top 3 finish from at least two of his four Vodacom Durban July selections, but only second-placed Irish Flame came good and he finished on 210 points.

In his TV interview with Deez Dyanand on Tellytrack (DSTV 232), Bradley revealed his strategy of sticking to the “champions” and made JJ The Jet Plane the banker in all his selections. The grand prize is made up of R95 000 cash and a R5 000 betting voucher kindly sponsored by Betting World, South Africa’s leading fixed odds layer of horseracing and sports betting.

Vodacom Durban July winner, Bold Silvano, finished on the top of the horse leader board, earning 52 points, scoring in each of his three starts during the season. Irish Flame, only 3 points adrift finished second and “JJ” was good value for his unblemished Gr.1 sprint record. The grand old Pocket Power kept his supporters alive throughout the competition and who knows he might yet be back next year!

By kind courtesy of Racing South Africa’s co-sponsors, two spot prizes were drawn every week live on Tellytrack and our appreciation is extended to the following: Betting World; Grant Felix; Trevor Fourie; Val Grantham; Marshall’s World of Winners; Van der Vyver Racing and Morris and Bradley Vee. Canon, Hartford House and Sporting Post were the other generous sponsors.

Significant changes are expected to be made to next year’s Charity Turf Challenge including overhauling the online entry system, fine tuning the points scoring system, introducing second and third prizes and relooking at the marketing of the competition.

Of course, the most important component is the legion of horseracing fans without whose support there would be no Charity Turf Challenge!

Until next time, happy racing!
