Kenilworth Race Course, Cape Town
South Africa is home to 10 racecourses in the country, half of which fall under the management of Gold Circle, Horseracing & Betting, and the other half by Phumelela, Gaming & Leisure.
Due to the vastness of the country and the climatic extremes experienced throughout, South Africa's racing programme is geared towards the best weather. Consequently, during the height of South Africa's summer (December/January), racing takes place in Cape Town with the highlight being the J&B Met, run on the last saturday of January.
Johannesburg's summer rainfall produces excellent racing surfaces and here the best Highveldt racing takes place during their Spring and Autumn Carnivals, the Sansui Summer Cup held in late November and the Champion's Challenge held in late April.
Durban's temperate climate guarantees a kind winter and is host to South Africa's top horses during the months of May, June and July, the undoubted feature attraction being the Vodacom Durban July.
