Founded in 1990, the Equine Research Centre (ERC) was established to provide scientific and veterinary services to the horseracing and breeding industry. The Centre is situated within the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort.
Originally funded (in part) by the Highveld Racing Authority, this responsibility was absorbed by the Thoroughbred Racing Trust when Phumelela Gaming and Leisure was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Racing South Africa’s shareholding offers the ERC an improved system of funding and it was recently agreed that a Management Committee would direct its management.
