Kenilworth Quarantine Station - General Information

A. PROTOCOL

The South African export protocol, 97/10/EC, was ratified by the European Union in 1997. Built on the principle of Regionalisation, South Africa is only permitted to export from the African horsesickness (AHS) Free Zone in the Western Cape. Horses for export must comply with the following conditions imposed by the South African Veterinary Services:

  • AHS vaccination status:

Horses must have received an AHS vaccine within 24 months of export and at least 60 days prior to entry to the AHS Controlled Area of the Western Cape.

  • Health Certificate for movement into the AHS Free Zone:

Issued by Private Veterinarian that horse is fit to travel to the  AHS Free Zone.

  • Movement Permit for entry to AHS Free Zone

Issue by State Veterinarian that horse is travelling to the AHS Controlled Area from an area that is free of AHS.

  • Passport:

Horses may not enter the AHS Free Zone without a passport suitable for international travel including verification of vaccination details by registered Veterinarian.

  • Other general information required:

Name, age, sex, breed and discipline of export horse as well as country of destination as specific disease criteria exist for different countries.

 B. FACILITY/SERVICES

Kenilworth Quarantine Station (KQS), South Africa’s world class pre-export quarantine station offers:

  • 32 vector-protected stables
  • Professional staff
  • Routine veterinary health checks and farrier work
  • Under the supervision of the State Veterinary Official:
    • Pre-export blood sample collection and testing
    • Preparation of Health Certification
  • Excellent exercise facilities including:

o   1200 meter sand training track

o   8-stall horse walker

o   Lunge ring

o   Bridle ways within Kenilworth Racecourse

  • Transport solution provided

 C. FEES

1.         KQS 40 day pre-export quarantine (PEQ) fee – R23 000.00 per horse.

2.         Additional days in KQS beyond 40 day PEQ – R500.00 per horse per day.

3.         If applicable, 20 day Free Zone residency fee – R2 400.00 per horse.

4.         If applicable, additional days before and beyond 20 day Free Zone residency - R120.00 per horse per day.

Note:  All quarantine fees described above are Vat exclusive.
